What is an N.D.?
Carol Rossetti is an N.D. which means Naturopathic Doctor. An M.D. is an Allopathic Doctor. There is also an NMD which refers to a Naturopathic Physician. The Naturopath (N.D.) deals only with natural remedies and treats the whole person dealing with nutrition and imbalances. The Allopath (M.D.) uses pharmaceuticals and invasive procedures and treats symptoms. A Naturopathic Physician is trained in natural remedies and some of the same things that a medical doctor is trained in but cannot practice as a medical doctor in most states but can practice as a Naturopath in most states. A Naturopathic Doctor is educated in all the natural modalities such as nutrition, herbology, homeopathy, Chinese Medicine, Ayurvedic (East Indian) Medicine, acupressure, acupuncture, and iridology.
What is Naturopathy?
Naturopathy is a distinct system of primary health care. It uses the least invasive, most physiologically supportive methods possible. Methods used are consistent with these principles, and are chosen based on an individualized analysis of your needs. The following principles are the foundation for the practice of naturopathic medicine:
The Healing Power of Nature
Your body has the inherent ability to establish, maintain, and restore health. The Naturopath's role is to facilitate and augment this process, to identify and remove obstacles to your health and recovery, and to support the creation of a healthy internal and external environment for you.
First Do No Harm
Naturopathic Doctors use methods and medicinal remedies that minimize the risk of harmful effects upon you, and apply the least possible force or intervention necessary to restore your health. Naturopathic Doctors respect and work with the healing power of nature.
Treat the Whole Person
Health and disease result from a complex of physical, mental, emotional, genetic, environmental, social, spiritual and other factors. Naturopathy recognizes the harmonious functioning of all aspects of you as being essential to health. Naturopathic Doctors treat the whole person that is you, taking all of these factors into account. A Naturopath believes that treating symptoms without getting to the heart of the matter does not result in a return to health.
Prevention
The ultimate goal of Naturopathy is prevention. This is accomplished through education and promotion of lifestyle habits that create good health. The Naturopath assesses risk factors and hereditary susceptibility to disease and makes appropriate interventions to avoid further harm and risk to you. The emphasis is on building health, rather than on fighting disease. Because it is difficult to be healthy in an unhealthy world, it is the responsibility of both you and your naturopathic doctor to create a healthier environment in which to live.
